Organizers called on the Detroit City Council to reject a measure to renew a $200,000 two-year maintenance contract with DataWorks Plus, the company that created the proprietary software of the Detroit Police Department’s facial recognition technology. Ending this contract would be a step toward dismantling Detroit’s Project Green Light surveillance program. The Detroit City Council approved the contract renewal by a 6-3 vote.
