HOW TO USE THIS WEBSITE:

DEFUND THE POLICE

A one-stop-shop for organizers and advocates looking for tools, resources, trainings, legislation and policies.

WHAT IS DEFUND THE POLICE?

#DefundPolice means divesting from institutions that kill, harm, cage and control our communities, and investing in housing, health care, income support, employment, and community-based safety strategies that will produce genuine and sustainable safety for all.

This site is a one-stop-shop information source for campaigns to defund police, and a place to ask questions, connect with existing networks, and find inspiration!

SINCE MAY 2020, ORGANIZERS IN OVER 20 CITIES HAVE:

  • Generated hundreds of thousands of emails, testimonies, and petition signatures calling for defunding of police and investment in communities
  • Secured divestment of over $840 million dollars from police departments
  • Secured investments of at least $160 million dollars in communities
  • Increased transparency and community control over budgets in many areas
  • Won bans on chemical/military grade weapons in 6 cities, and on use of facial recognition in 4 cities.

Additionally, over 25 cities canceled contracts with local police departments operating in schools, saving an additional $34 million to be invested in student, family and community supports and restorative justice.

CANADIAN RESOURCE SITE

Borders don’t come between Black people demanding to defund police and invest in our communities. In a long tradition of global Black solidarity, communities across Turtle Island and around the world are sharing strategies and joining together to demand divestment from criminal punishment systems that kill, harm and loot resources from our communities, and investments in Black communities, and in genuine and lasting public safety.

Our intention is for this site and defundthepolice.org, which highlights struggles to defund police in Canada, to be read together as a shared tapestry of resistance.
